http://www.mathplayground.com/fractions_compare.html
It's a lot of fun!
4. Parents: Interviews are coming up next week. I've sent home an interview time (it would be about the same time as our last interviews). Please check with your child and let me know if the time is good for you!

Wednesday's homework
1. Read for 20 minutes
2. Work on your heritage fair project!
3. Finish the math work begun today in class.
Apologies for the lateness of some of these posts - I'm having trouble using blogger at the school....
For those of you looking to buy plastic backboards for your heritage fair projects, just a quick word to let you know that they're not available at Staples, but you can purchase them at Colours (right by Captain Sub). Thanks to Michelle for the tip!

A copy of the letter I'll be sending home on Tuesday.
February 21, 2012
Dear parent,
The students have been hard at work on their Heritage Fair projects! I thought I’d take a moment to update you on where we are and where we’re going.
Right now we’re working hard on our written essays. Even if they have a partner for the project, each student is required to hand in their own essay. I’ve looked over a rough first draft of your child’s essay, and we’ll be spending the next week revising and editing them. Any way you can help your child, be it through going over their essays with them or helping them find more information would be greatly appreciated.
We will be starting work on the actual displays for the fair some time next week. One of the requirements for the fair is a backboard made from non-flammable material. I believe that Staples sells some plastic ones, and many students are re-using backboards from previous projects or using home-made ones. We will be doing the bulk of the project at school, but you can help your child by helping them find photos, art supplies to decorate their project, and any props that could add to the effectiveness of the project.
Here’s a breakdown of the all the dates regarding the project:
Friday, March 2: Final copy of the essay due.
Wednesday, March 7: Report cards go home (not to do with the Heritage Fair per se, but good information to have)
Friday, March 16: Heritage Fair project due* I realize that this is almost a full month before the Heritage Fair itself. This will be my last day at school before my maternity leave, and I am hoping to tie up all loose ends before leaving.
Friday, April 13: Heritage Fair at Elm Street. This date is apparently tentative. Usually parents are able to come and visit in the afternoon.
Your child is doing their project on: _______________________________
Their partner (if they have one) in the project is: _______________________
Visit our class blog (madamejen5b.blogspot.com) to keep up-to-date on the details of the project and what’s going on in class. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call, email (jxgalle@edu.pe.ca) or write.

Some links to help you with your heritage fair project
http://www.canadashistory.ca/
This website generally talks about Canadian History. It might be difficult to find information about specific people (especially famous Islanders), but it's a good place to get some background information.
http://www.wikipedia.org/
Don't forget about what we talked about regarding wikipedia: it's a great place to start, but you shouldn't base all of your information on it. It is very easy for people to edit the page and put in false information. Scroll to the bottom of the page and use the "sources" section.
http://www.gov.pe.ca/
This is a good place to find the addresses of places of interest. It doesn't have a lot of information, but it has contact information and maps.
http://www.gov.pe.ca/tourism/heritagefair
The heritage fair website! Here you'll find all the official information you need to create your project.
http://www.islandregister.com/
I love this website! It has all kinds of information about the history of PEI, including a list of islanders of the past (going back to the days of Acadians), and a list of ships and the people immigrating to PEI. It might not help you with your project, but it could be fun to look up your Island ancestors.
